Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
